Ivermectin OTC in Tennessee
Why a Weight-Based, Pharmacist-Guided Dose Still MattersTennessee has allowed pharmacies to provide ivermectin without requiring a separate doctor's visit since 2022. This is often described as "over-the-counter," but it's a bit more involved than that — and understanding how it actually works will help you know what to expect.
How this works at Joshua Brown Family Pharmacy
Because we compound ivermectin specifically for each patient, it isn't a shelf item you simply pick up — it still functions as a prescription. What Tennessee's legislation changes is how you access that prescription: under our collaborative practice agreement, our pharmacist team can assess you and determine your dose entirely in-house, without a separate visit to an outside doctor's office. You'll complete an in-house assessment form, and from there, our pharmacist team determines the appropriate weight-based dose for you. As with every prescription filled at Joshua Brown Family Pharmacy, you'll receive pharmacist counseling when you pick up your medication.
Why weight-based, pharmacist-guided dosing matters
Ivermectin is dosed based on body weight. We don't dispense standard fixed-strength tablets — every dose we prepare is compounded specifically to your weight-based amount, determined through your in-house assessment and pharmacist oversight from screening through dispensing.
Conditions we can help with
-Parasitic infections
-Scabies
-Head lice
This is a compounded preparation, prepared for you based on individual assessment — not a substitute for evaluation by a healthcare provider.
Do I need a doctor first?
No — under our collaborative practice agreement, our pharmacist team can assess you and determine your dose entirely in-house. You'll complete an assessment form at the pharmacy.
Is this the same as buying ivermectin off a shelf?
Not quite. Because we compound your dose specifically for you, it still functions as a prescription — the difference is you don't need a separate outside doctor's visit to get it.
How long does the process take?
Compounded medications generally have a 24-hour turnaround time during normal pharmacy hours. Your pharmacist team will let you know a more specific pickup time when you complete your assessment.
